Boating License Requirements in Colorado
Colorado requires boating education on a partial, age-based basis. Operators aged 18 and older may legally operate a motorboat without a boating-safety certificate. Those aged 14 to 17 must complete a Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW)–approved boating-safety course and carry the certificate while operating. Children under 14 are not permitted to operate a motorboat. These rules took effect on June 1, 2024. The required credential is a CPW-approved certificate from a course meeting NASBLA standards.
