Boating License Requirements in Oklahoma
Oklahoma requires boating education on a partial basis. Operators ages 12 to 15 must obtain an Oklahoma Boating Safety Education Certificate, which meets National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) minimum standards. Operators 16 and older are exempt from this requirement. The certificate is accepted from other states under reciprocity provisions.
Additional restrictions apply to younger operators. Those under 12 may not operate a motorboat exceeding 10 horsepower, a personal watercraft, or a sailboat 16 feet or longer. Operators ages 12 to 15 may run such vessels only while holding the required certificate or while accompanied by an adult 18 or older. Those 16 and older operate without restriction. Current requirements should be confirmed with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Marine Enforcement Section, part of the Department of Public Safety, as regulations may change.

What a boater-education card proves
A boater-education card shows you’ve passed a NASBLA-approved safety course covering navigation rules, required equipment and emergencies — it is not a driver’s-license-style test of skill. Most states accept an approved card from any state, but who must carry one, and from what age, is set state by state. Check the rule below, then confirm it on the official state agency page before you head out.
