Boating Course & Fees in Iowa

Iowa requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1989, to complete a boater safety education course and carry a boater education certificate while operating a motorboat. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources approves boater education courses that meet NASBLA (North American Safe Boating Council) standards. Upon successful completion of an approved course, applicants must obtain an Iowa DNR boater education certificate, which carries a $5.00 issuance fee.

The cost of the boater safety course itself varies depending on the provider selected. The BoatUS Foundation offers a free online course option, while commercial vendors typically charge approximately $50 for their courses. Individuals should verify current course pricing directly with providers and confirm the most up-to-date fee structure through the official Iowa DNR website before enrolling.

Course costs vs. card fees

Two different prices are at play: the boater-safety course (often free or low-cost, set by the approved vendor) and any state card or processing fee. Several states offer a free NASBLA-approved course — for example through the BoatUS Foundation — so the card can cost little beyond a small state fee. Vendor prices change, so confirm the current course list and fees on the official state agency page.
