How to Get a Boating License in Kentucky
In Kentucky, boaters aged 12 to 17 must obtain a Kentucky Safe Boating Certificate Card. Adults 18 and older are not required to carry boating education certification. Anyone uncertain about whether they fall within the affected age group should confirm their status with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources.
To obtain the required card, eligible boaters must complete a course approved by NASBLA (the North American Safe Boating Association). Upon successful completion of an approved course, boaters receive a certificate that serves as proof of completion. This certificate should be carried while operating a boat.
For current information on approved courses and any changes to Kentucky's boating education requirements, boaters should consult the official Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources website or contact the agency directly.
- Confirm whether you're in the population this state covers (cutoff / age band).
- Take the accepted course: Kentucky Safe Boating Certificate Card (or any NASBLA-approved course certificate).
- Pass the test and receive your card or certificate.
- Carry it aboard whenever you operate, and confirm the current rule on the official state page.

Carry the card every time you operate
Once you’ve earned the card, keep it aboard whenever you operate — many states require you to show it on request, and a card from one state is usually honored in another. If you’ll boat across state lines, check each state’s rule, since the covered ages and accepted credentials differ. Always confirm the current requirement on the official state agency page.
