How to Get a Boating License in Nebraska

Residents and visitors operating a motorized boat in Nebraska must meet state education requirements. Individuals born after December 31, 1985, are required to complete a boater-education course and obtain a Nebraska Boater Education Certificate before operating a motorized vessel on state waters. Those born on or before that date may not be subject to this requirement, though confirmation of applicable rules is advisable.

To obtain the certificate, a person must enroll in a course approved by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission that meets NASBLA (North American Association of Boating Law Administrators) standards. Upon completion, the candidate must pass the course examination with a score of 75 percent or higher. The resulting Nebraska Boater Education Certificate does not expire and should be carried while operating a motorized boat.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission maintains the official list of approved courses and current regulatory requirements. Individuals seeking to fulfill this requirement should consult the NGPC directly to confirm the current course options, eligible providers, and any updates to state boating regulations.

  1. Confirm whether you're in the population this state covers (cutoff / age band).
  2. Take the accepted course: Nebraska Boater Education Certificate (NASBLA-approved course; exam pass >=75%); does not expire.
  3. Pass the test and receive your card or certificate.
  4. Carry it aboard whenever you operate, and confirm the current rule on the official state page.

Carry the card every time you operate

Once you’ve earned the card, keep it aboard whenever you operate — many states require you to show it on request, and a card from one state is usually honored in another. If you’ll boat across state lines, check each state’s rule, since the covered ages and accepted credentials differ. Always confirm the current requirement on the official state agency page.
