No mandatory education card: States in This Tier
No mandatory education card
Several states maintain a tier in which there is no mandatory statewide education card requirement to operate a motorboat. Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, South Dakota, and Wyoming fall into this category. In these jurisdictions, boaters are not legally required to complete a formal boater-education course or carry a corresponding certificate to legally operate a vessel. Despite the absence of a mandate, completion of a NASBLA-approved boater-education course remains voluntary and is widely recommended as a way to develop safe operating skills and knowledge.
The specific regulations and any exemptions within this tier vary by state, and requirements can change. Boaters should verify the current boater-education requirements for the specific state in which they plan to operate by consulting that state's official fish and wildlife or boating agency website. This article does not constitute legal advice. State boating laws are subject to change, and confirming compliance with applicable regulations is the responsibility of each individual boater.
