Who Needs a Boating License in Arizona

Arizona does not require boater-education certification to operate a motorized vessel. No specific boater-education card or credential is mandated by the state. However, a NASBLA-approved boater safety course is recommended for all operators, regardless of age or vessel type.

Operators must be at least 12 years old to operate a motorized vessel or personal watercraft with more than 8 horsepower; those under 12 may only operate such vessels in emergencies or with a supervising adult aged 18 or older aboard. No minimum age applies to vessels with 8 horsepower or less. Individuals should verify current reciprocity rules and any recent regulatory changes on the official Arizona state agency page before operating on Arizona waters.
