Who Needs a Boating License in Florida

In Florida, boater-education requirements apply to individuals born on or after January 1, 1988 who operate a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. Operators must be at least 14 years old to operate a personal watercraft and at least 18 years old to rent one. The required credential is the Florida Boating Safety Education Identification Card, obtained through a NASBLA-approved course. The card does not expire once issued.

Florida recognizes boating-education credentials from other states through reciprocity agreements. However, boating regulations and age requirements change periodically, and the specifics of reciprocity policies may vary. Individuals should confirm current requirements and accepted credentials on the official Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website before operating a vessel or enrolling in an education course.
