Boating License Requirements in Georgia
Georgia requires boater education for persons born on or after January 1, 1998, who operate any motorized vessel. Those 16 and older may operate without restriction provided they carry valid identification. Operators aged 12 to 15 must either complete a DNR-approved boater education course or be accompanied by a competent adult; children under 12 may operate vessels only under adult supervision on motorboats 30 horsepower or less that are under 16 feet in length.
Proof of completion comes as a boater education card or as a boating endorsement added to a Georgia driver's license or state ID through the Department of Driver Services. Georgia recognizes boating credentials from other states. Regulations change periodically and state implementation may vary; individuals should confirm current requirements through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division or Wildlife Resources Division website before operating a motorized vessel.

What a boater-education card proves
A boater-education card shows you’ve passed a NASBLA-approved safety course covering navigation rules, required equipment and emergencies — it is not a driver’s-license-style test of skill. Most states accept an approved card from any state, but who must carry one, and from what age, is set state by state. Check the rule below, then confirm it on the official state agency page before you head out.
