Who Needs a Boating License in Georgia
In Georgia, boater-education certification is required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1998 who operates a motorized vessel. The credential must be obtained through a DNR-approved boater-education course that meets NASBLA standards. Proof of completion can be carried as a boater-education card or as a boating endorsement on a Georgia driver's license or ID issued by the Department of Driver Services.
Operating age restrictions apply to younger boaters. Children under 12 may operate a motorized vessel only when accompanied by a competent adult, and the vessel must be under 16 feet with a motor of 30 horsepower or less. Boaters aged 12 to 15 may operate independently if they have completed a course-certified boater-education program, or they may operate if accompanied by a competent adult. Boaters aged 16 and older may operate without restriction provided they have valid identification. Georgia recognizes boater-education credentials from other states. Regulations may change; operators should confirm current requirements on the Georgia Department of Natural Resources official website.
