Boating License Requirements in Maine
In Maine, boater education requirements apply selectively based on age and vessel type. Individuals born on or after January 1, 1999, must complete an approved boater safety and education course to operate personal watercraft of any size or motorboats exceeding 25 horsepower. Those born before that date are not subject to this requirement. The credential accepted is a Maine boater safety and education course certificate approved by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW).
Operating age restrictions vary by vessel and education status. Personal watercraft operators must be at least 16 years old. Individuals born on or after January 1, 1999, may operate motorboats over 25 horsepower at age 12 if they have completed the required course; those under 12 may not operate vessels over 10 horsepower unless under immediate supervision of someone at least 16 years old who has completed the course. Maine recognizes boater education certificates from other states. Regulations may be enforced differently in coastal waters by the Department of Marine Resources Marine Patrol. Boaters should verify current requirements directly with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, as boating regulations are subject to change.

What a boater-education card proves
A boater-education card shows you’ve passed a NASBLA-approved safety course covering navigation rules, required equipment and emergencies — it is not a driver’s-license-style test of skill. Most states accept an approved card from any state, but who must carry one, and from what age, is set state by state. Check the rule below, then confirm it on the official state agency page before you head out.
