Who Needs a Boating License in Maine
In Maine, boater-education requirements apply to specific operator groups. Those born on or after January 1, 1999, must complete an approved boater safety and education course before operating a personal watercraft of any size or a motorboat exceeding 25 horsepower. The minimum operating age for personal watercraft is 16. For motorboats over 25 horsepower, operators born on or after January 1, 1999, may begin operation at age 12 if they have completed an approved course; operators under 12 may not operate a motorboat exceeding 10 horsepower unless directly supervised by someone at least 16 years old who has completed the required course.
The credential required is a Maine boater safety and education course certificate issued by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Maine recognizes boater-education certificates from other states through reciprocity agreements. Boating regulations and requirements can change; individuals should confirm current requirements and approved course providers on the official Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website.
